Responsibilities:

  • Communicate, support and collaborate with families to promote healthy relationships.
  • Collaborate with classroom personnel.
  • Submit in a timely manner weekly lesson plans to the Education Director.
  • Plan and communicate effectively with all other classroom staff, including special education staff, volunteers and interns about weekly lessons, classroom activities and other pertinent information regarding children.
  • Design weekly lesson plans (including plans for individualization of instruction) and post them in a conspicuous location in the classroom to inform substitute teachers and/or volunteers of classroom activities and routine in her/his absence.
  • Complete in mandated screenings and assessments within the allotted time frame
  • Ensure classroom activities are child-centered and/or child-led.
  • Allow children the opportunity to make choices, resolve conflicts using language, to express their feelings and opinion.
  • Implement and plan activities that promotes critical thinking and inquiry-based learning
  • Organize daily group activities that include phonological reading, singing and poetry reading (rhyming). 
  • Encourage reading and writing readiness utilizing educational materials during small group time or independent play
  • Create and adhere to a posted classroom daily schedule including allotted time for naps.
  • Showcase children’s work and ensure that the classroom is print-rich
  • Plan daily STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities in and out of the classroom.
  • Recognize teaching opportunities to promote social emotional development and promote universal values of tolerance, compassion and respect among children.
  • Create a peaceful classroom environment where conflicts are resolved thoughtfully
  • Expose children to individuals of different cultural life styles, different genders and different sexual orientation through stories, posted pictures and discussion.
  • Ensure that children are engaged in oral hygiene education through daily tooth brushing, stories, skits and other activities.  
  • Facilitate, observe and communicate the importance of healthy eating habits through family style meal time
  • Monitor daily attendance and communicate to dedicated BSECDC staff if a child needs additional supports 
  • Share tracking responsibilities of daily meal count for the CACFP program
  • Encourage and ensure all adults eat with children during meal time
  • Enforce health and safety rules pertaining to food allergies, universal precautions and personal hygiene
  • Implement fully all applicable laws and regulations cited in the Head Start Performance Standards, the Head Start Act, IDEA, IFSP, FERPA, ACYFIM, Department of Education and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Health Licensing Code, Article 47 NAEYC.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education with NY State Certification
  • Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education working towards NYS Certification
  • Bachelor Degree with a study plan toward a degree in Early Childhood Education
  • Minimum of two years-experience working with preschoolers
  • Encourages a supportive and nurturing learning environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communications skills
  • Proficient with Google and Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Excel applications
