Under the direction of the Childcare Center Director, the Early Childhood Teacher Assistant attends to children in the designated area; observes and monitors play activities, reads, plays games, administers meals and snacks, keeps area and children clean and tidy. The Teacher Assistant will accompany children on walks or other outings, assist lead teacher with implementing activities and always ensures safety and well-being of children in their care. The position is responsible for demonstrating YMCA leadership competencies to ensure the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.

Responsibilities:

• Assist lead teacher in implementing daily classroom activities and lesson planning.

• Develop and maintain a positive relationship with staff and parents.

• Maintain a safe and attractive environment for all children in the program.

• Assist in the preparation and distribution of snacks and meals.

• Assist with cleanliness in classroom and childcare facility.

• Know the emergency procedures, rules, and regulations.

• Know and implement established child care policies and NYS OCFS regulations.

• Attend all required meetings and training.

• Maintain required certifications.

• All other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to supervise children by sight and sound at all times.

• Ability to move quickly to react to safety issues in the setting (i.e. climbing, aggressive behavior).

• Ability to remain calm, objective and respectful in potentially stressful situations (i.e. crying upset child, upset parent, or upset staff).

• Ability to move around the room to assist children and supervise children with daily activities, social interaction, physical and emotional needs.

• Ability to lift young children and objects (food baskets and supplies) up to 40 lbs.

• Ability to work in all elements (i.e. outside in all weather)Ability to move from program site to branch or site to site, and is required to enter all YMCA environments including, program space, buses, schools, pools, and program area.

Qualifications:

Requirements

• Must be at least 16 years of age and have at least one year experience working with children under 13 years of age, preferably in an organized setting.

• High school diploma or GED and Child Development Associate (CDA) credential preferred.

• Bring to this position maturity, responsibility, and a sincere interest in working with people.

• Have strong interpersonal, communication, and organization skills.

• Meet all guidelines and requirements for Assistant Teacher mandated by the Office of Children & Family Services.

• CPR/AED and First Aid Certified or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.

About Goals

Your goals describe specific areas that you are working on (or plan to work on) to improve or maintain the quality of your program. Goals connect your quality improvement work to the QUALITY standards and your rating and allow you to schedule and prioritize chunks of work in your progranm. Goals group together and organize related action items (tasks) and provide a narrative framework to keep you, your program, your QIM and Central Office on the same page.

Goal Scope and Scale

You have a lot of flexibility in developing QI Goals, but some rules of thumb help keep Goals useful, readable, and manageable:

  • Time: A Goal should be achievable roughly within a rating cycle, If you are struggling to put even an estimated end date on a Goal, it may be too broad. Ideally, several Goals will fit (with some overlap) within a rating cycle.
  • Standards: A Goal should roughly fit within a standard subcategory. This is flexible, of course, but if your Goal is spanning multiple standard categories, it may be too broad.
  • A Goal may be too small if it can be accomplished in one or two small steps.
  • A Goal may be too broad if you can't define concisely how you will know when it is complete.
Goal Label

The goal label is simply a brief title that allows you to distinguish this goal from others in a list or report. The more robust description of the Goal comes in the Goal statement below.

Think of it like naming a file on your computer so that later you can recognize it. This label will appear on your goal as a "title" along with your Goal statement, as well as being the identifier in drop-down or selection lists for viewing/using Goals.
