Description:

Work within the framework of the center guidelines; carrying out its functions, policies, and procedures. The group teacher shall also observe the schedules in the center and adhere to all personnel policies and practices.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. SUPERVISING A GIVEN GROUP OF CHILDREN.

Supervise and ensure the safety, cleanliness, and well-being of the children & school environment at all times.  Be alert to needs and/or problems as individuals and as a group.

  1. Supervise the planning and execution of a program to provide services for children, taking into account the cognitive, social, cultural, health, and, developmental needs of ALL children.
  2. To take responsibility for keeping equipment and materials accessible and in good condition, thus encouraging maximum constructive use by the children.
  3. To take responsibility for removing or reporting any damaged or hazardous equipment to the director or other designated person so that necessary action may be taken.
  4. To take responsibility for planning and supervising an appropriate arrangement for the classroom design and or furniture placement to promote optimal program functioning.
  5. To engage in the overall planning for the best use of shared space in the center.
  6. To plan and utilize community resources to enrich the educational content of the children's program.
  7. To develop a program of sound educational goals appropriate to the age and developmental levels of each child and the class as a whole, by providing various experiences and activities for children including but not limited to songs, games, and storytelling.
  8. To build children's self-esteem and comfort children.
  9. Establish routines and provide positive guidance by clearly and effectively communicating in a manner that children understand.
  10. Observe children and make note of student progress. Keep student's portfolios up-to-date, well-maintained, and safe.
  11.  Integrate special needs children positively and respectfully.
  12. To utilize the Creative Curriculum, Common Core Standards, New York State Standards, and School Readiness Goals to ensure student achievement.

 

  1. PROMOTING THE PROFESSIONAL GROWTH OF STAFF MEMBERS.
  1. To share with coworkers their mutual knowledge and understanding of the center and the community that their center serves.
  2. To take responsibility for the professional growth and development of assistant teachers through regularly scheduled individual and classroom group conferences based on daily observation of staff members' performance within the group and their application of new skills as acquired through training and expertise.
  3. In cooperation with the director, assist in the annual evaluation of the job performance of assistant teachers.
  4. To take responsibility for equitable sharing among all classroom personnel relating to all areas of the program.

 

  1. PROMOTING SOUND PARENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
  1. Develop an appropriate plan by which information concerning the children and the program can be shared with parents/guardians.
  2. Assist Traditional in promoting parent literacy and early education.
  3. To attend and participate in parent meetings.
  4. Participate in community activities.
  5. Discuss identified problems and needs with professionals as appropriate.
  6. Keep parents informed of program expectations, program activities, and their children's progress respectfully and conscientiously.
  7. To respect the confidential nature of ALL information about parents and children.

 

Qualifications:

(1) Education/State certification. A baccalaureate degree in early childhood education or related field

of study and a current valid certification issued by the State Education Department under 8 NYCRR

§80 or successor rule or equivalent certification from another jurisdiction, as a teacher in the field of early childhood education.

(2) Equivalent certification. Certification from a public or private certifying or teacher accrediting organization or agency approved by the Department.

(3) Study plan eligible. The person has proposed a plan for meeting the requirements of paragraph

(1) or (2) of this subdivision within seven years, and has obtained approval of this plan by an accredited college. A person who is study plan eligible shall submit documentation to the Department indicating proof of enrollment in such college and specifying the time required for completion of training. To be study plan, an person shall have the:

(A) Associate’s (AA or AS) degree in early children education, practicum included; or

(B) Ninety or more undergraduate college credits and one year of paid classroom experience teaching children in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, or grades 1-2; or

(C) Baccalaureate or master’s degree in any other academic subject and one year of paid classroom experience teaching children up to third grade.

 

Minimum Education Level: Associate's Degree
Preferred Education Level: Bachelor's Degree
