Description:

Freedom House, a crisis shelter for disabled victims of domestic violence, provides comprehensive services to families and single individuals to assist them in recovering from their experiences of trauma. Services include individual and group counseling, case management, assistance with housing and government benefits, on-site child care, occupational therapy, and medical and psychiatric care. This state-of-the-art facility is the first completely accessible domestic violence shelter for individuals with disabilities in the country.

Childcare Worker Position is available with our Freedom House Program. This position reports to Director of Childcare and Recreation.

Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community.  Through its various programs, BFL provides a broad range of residential and non-residential services to disabled survivors of domestic violence, transitional shelter to the disabled homeless, and outreach to physically disabled individuals with mental health and/or chemical addiction issues.  Services include case management; housing placements; independent living skills training; occupational therapy; short- and long-term individual counseling; advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems; and referrals to outside services.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Engage children in recreational and play activities.
  • Maintain effective disciplinary policies.
  • Maintain good communication and share concerns with clinical team.

Qualifications:

  • Spanish and English Bilingual
  • High School Diploma.
  • Teacher Assistant Certification preferred

Additional Information:

  • Must have 2 years of experience working with children in an Educational setting (school, day care, head start program or nursery).
  • 18 years and older.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities and domestic violence population preferred.
  • Must be available to work two late shifts (12pm-8pm) during the week.
  • Acceptable background clearance including fingerprinting.
  • Must be enthusiastic and constantly alert.
  • Must communicate effectively with the children and their parents, as well as with other child care workers. Workers should be mature, patient, understanding, articulate and have energy.
  • Skills in music, art, drama, and storytelling also are important.
  • Strong oral communication skills and fundamental writing competency required.

Hours:

Mondays: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Tuesdays: 12:00-8:00PM

Wednesday: 10:00-6:00PM

Thursdays: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Fridays: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Some Saturdays/Sundays: Special Events, Hours varies
