Overview

The Custodian reports to the designated Site Director and will work in the housekeeping department performing the tasks related to keeping the appearance of the building clean and orderly. 

The essential functions of the job include but are not limited to the duties listed on the job description.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities 

• Maintain an inventory of housekeeping and maintenance supplies and notify the Site Director of any orders needed. 

• Daily cleaning and sanitizing all bathroom sinks, and toilets. 

• Sweep, vacuum, mopping all floors including waxing and buffing, as needed. 

• Daily wash-off tables, sweeping and mopping floors in all areas. 

• Hallway sweeping, dusting, and mopping. 

• Keeping all building entrances and exits clear of any obstructions and in compliance to the N.Y.C. Fire Safety stipulations. 

• Cleaning entrance of building; hose sidewalk and entrance when required. 

• Daily bag trash after meals, remove garbage debris to proper areas. 

• Remove ice and snow when required. 

• Does not abuse sick time or personal days 

• Consistently reports to work on time and is ready to begin work at the start of the shift 

• Always provides proper notification when late absent. 

• Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow. Able to perform duties independently, with minimal need of direct supervision. 

• Reports to work well-groomed and in compliance with dress code. 

• Demonstrates the ability to interact in a positive and helpful manner with clients, visitors, staff, and volunteers. 

• Reflects commitment to building a supportive work environment and maintains a positive attitude at the workplace. 

• Projects a good image in dealing with the public and clients. 

• Is willing to make an extra effort to help build a quality work environment. 

Qualifications:

Qualifications 

• Valid Certificate of Fitness. S95 a plus, F07, F12, or F13 (Required) 

• Very good physical condition and strength. 

• Valid Driver’s License issued by state of residence and in good standing (encouraged). 

• Ability to plan and schedule daily work matters. 

• Ability to plan and schedule projects and goals. 

• Nurturing spirit and welcoming personality. 

• Clearance for fingerprint, drug test and criminal background check. 

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Three (3) reference checks
  • Obtain mandated reporter training certificate (every two years) and other Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and Head Start Performance Standards (HSPS) training requirements.
  • Ability to pass Comprehensive Background Clearance through 
    • Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) 
    • Indentogo
    • Department of Education Fingerprinting Screening
    • NYS Central Registry
    • Sex Offender Registry Clearance
    • SEL check
    • Full physical examination with updated TB test, varicella, tdap, MMR (fees may apply)
  • If hired, Bedford Stuyvesant Early Childhood Development Center requires all potential employees to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination.

Working hours depend on the site need. Certain days of the year may require the Custodian to change or modify their hours. All employees are expected to exhibit flexibility with their schedule at all times of service.
