About the award

Young children deserve teachers who commit to excellence every day. Exceptional teachers encourage children's academic, social, emotional, and ethical development, while creating environments that are safe for learning and infused with joyfulness and imagination. They help children build competence and confidence in their abilities as learners and citizens of the classroom. Children, families and schools thrive when they are supported by inspiring, dedicated teachers.

To honor such teachers, The NYC Early Childhood Professional Development Institute has developed the Excellence in Teaching Recognition Award program, generously funded by the United Way.

This program is designed to:

  • Pay tribute to teachers who are committed to preserving the dignity of childhood and who honor the spirit of children every day.
  • Focus public attention on teachers that create nurturing environments, strong bonds with families and communities, and meaningful learning experiences for children.
  • Provide a forum for teachers to share their beliefs, values, and goals in order to inspire others to become passionate, motivated teachers.
