General Guidelines for Using the Electronic Mailing Lists

  • Be respectful and tolerant: remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, in many cases different than yours. Respect the various practices employed and the diversity of each member.

  • Avoid Advertising: ideas and networking are encouraged but not soliciting products, is not permited. Recommend resources and tools but do not advertise.

  • Emailing others: When you reply to an email on the LISTSERV, remember that the entire community will be receiving your response. If you want to have an individual communication with someone, please email them directly.

  • Use the list as a space to: discuss, reflect and question ideas following sound early childhood practices.

  • Be as clear and concise as you can: using a descriptive subject line, spelling out acronyms and avoiding jargon or explaining the terms that you use.

  • Sharing your news: If you would like to distribute information about your conferences and events, be brief but provide a link or other contact information so people can find out more details about it if they wish. You can also contact the PDI to post the information on our What's New Section

  • Scan previous discussion threads: to see if your question has already been answered or what has been said about the topic of interest. You might find useful information and you will be avoiding repetitive discussions in the process.

How to Use the Electronic Mailing Lists - FAQs

What is an Electronic Mailing List?

Electronic discussion groups or mailing lists give people the opportunity to have conversations about different topics via email. Mailing lists use a software program that runs on a central computer to send messages to all subscribers. These lists sometimes are called LISTSERVS because that is the name of the software program used.

What type of Electronic Mailing Lists do you offer?

There are different types of mailing lists, including announcement lists that are similar to newsletters and discussion lists that offer subscribers online forums for discussion.

The PDI offers discussion lists that are moderated. Therefore all messages that are sent to the group are screened first. Our moderators approve, edit or reject messages to prevent inappropriate comments and then forward them to the entire group.

How do I Send a Message to the Group?

To send an email to all the subscribers, all you have to do is type the email address of the list you belong to, in the case of early childhood directors the email is ecdirector@listserv.cuny.edu and for educators the email is eceducator@listserv.cuny.edu

To respond to someone else’s email simply reply to the message. Remember that all subscribers will receive your response.

Can I send a Private Message?

The way to send a private email to a subscriber is to find out the email address of the person you would like to contact and send a regular email. LISTSERVS are only used to send emails to the group. Always remember that when you send an email to ecdirector@listserv.cuny.edu or eceducator@listserv.cuny.edu you will be sending a message to the whole group.

What do I need in order to participate in an electronic mailing list?

In order to be part of a discussion group all you need is an email address. If you don’t have one, there are many places where you can get a free account including:

www.yahoomail.com
www.hotmail.com
www.gmail.com

However, if you need help opening an account, please feel free to contact us at 646-344-7293 and we will assist you in the process.

Does this have a cost?

There are no membership charges for participating in our electronic mailing lists! You can subscribe and unsubscribe at anytime.

Are there any records of previous discussions?

All discussions are archived. You can search through these records to see if your question as already been answered or if the group has previously discussed the topic you are interested in. Just follow the links bellow to access the archives. There you can search by key word or month.
