Homes for the Homeless seeks a service-oriented Assistant Daycare Teacher for our Early Learning/Childcare center in Jamaica Queens. Our full day Early Learn and UPK classroom is located within a residential and community center for families and children experiencing homeless. The Early Learn classrooms are licensed by the Dept. of Education, with a team of certified teachers, high-quality equipment and materials, a large playground, and innovative curricula. We have many programs and events throughout the year that keep our center fun-filled and exciting.

Our ideal candidate works well in a team atmosphere and has a passion for the development of children. This is an excellent position for a college student or education professional interested in working with children aged 2-6 years old outside of the traditional classroom setting. Candidates working towards a Bachelor’s in Early Education or a Child Development Associates degree are encouraged to apply.

Homes for the Homeless (HFH), a non-profit social services-based organization, operates family shelters throughout NYC and is expanding rapidly to continue its mission of providing homeless families and their children with shelter, opportunities and support. HFH helps create lasting solutions for families experiencing homelessness through self-sufficiency planning, goal setting, and achievement. We strive to accomplish this mission by developing practical skills such as financial literacy and job readiness for parents while enriching the lives of children through educational programs, youth development, and fun recreational activities, all the while paving the path for families to move forward.

Responsibilities:

  • Help to create and maintain a safe and nurturing environment.

  • Supervise children in a daycare for 2-year old’s and a UPK classroom of 3 to 6-year old’s.

  • Assist in the planning and execution of a program to provide childcare for children.

  • Contribute in planning the use of community resources to enrich the educational content of the children’s program.

  • Provide support in developing a program of sound educational goals appropriate to the age and developmental level of children which will enable them to make the most of future educational opportunities.

  • Work within the framework of Homes for the Homeless Early Learn/Child Care center and carry out its functions, policies and procedures.

  • Work schedules are 8-hour shifts between 7:00am-6:00pm, depending on the needs of the classrooms. Must be able to work a floating schedule.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and at least 18 years old.

  • Willingness to be flexible on schedule - this is a floating position that supports two classrooms.

  • Holds a valid Level I or higher New York State Teaching Assistant certification.

  • Early Education Teacher Certification preferred.

  • Sensitivity and awareness while working with homeless and vulnerable populations.
  • Must be able to pass a multi-stage background investigation which includes employment history and criminal background check.
  • Ability to lift 40 or more pounds.

  • Ability to sit on the floor, bend down, and pick up children throughout the course of an eight-hour shift.
