Brooklyn Sandbox is an emergent preschool centered around principles of the Reggio Emilia approach. We serve children ages 2 - 5. Our learning exploration fosters independence, collaboration and problem solving and uses social emotional development and inclusion as a foundation of community building in our classrooms. Teachers are co-learners and collaborate with the children to build a curriculum centered around their interests. Much of our exploration of the world and each other takes place outdoors.

We are located in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

JOB TITLE:  Education Director
STATUS:  Exempt
LOCATION:  Brooklyn, NY
REPORTS TO:  Executive Director
   
JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Education Director is responsible for the day to day operation of the school, including hiring, supervision, training and development of staff, curriculum development, enrollment and family intake, and relationships with parents and children.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Uphold the mission of Brooklyn Sandbox through comprehensive curriculum, high level of client service and proactive staff development
• Build a caring community of parents, teachers, and children
• Deliver the highest level of client service to families, foster parent collaboration, and problem solving
• Develop relationships in the community to expand Brooklyn Sandbox’s presence 
• Develop an emergent Reggio-inspired curriculum targeting age appropriate milestones based on developmental needs 
• Utilize internal and external resources in the development of teaching staff   
• Ensure ongoing state required teacher training and certifications are met annually
• Oversee the day to day operations of the school while demonstrating exceptional professional conduct and consideration for the educational development, safety and welfare of the children and staff
• Compliance with current county, state, federal governmental regulations and company procedures and policies
• Oversee day-to day operational procedures including facility and classroom maintenance
• Meet monthly budget requirements
• Manage annual enrollment process within a target enrollment of at least 90%
• Hire external teaching resources such as music and art teachers to meet program needs
• Source, hire, retain and develop a highly qualified and professional teaching team
• Observe teacher instruction and interactions in classrooms a minimum of 40% daily

Teacher Development

• Coach, develop, motivate, and provide feedback to head and assistant teachers
• Conduct monthly informal observations of each teacher and share feedback
• Conduct quarterly one on one meetings to facilitate teacher development
• Observe and provide feedback at training sessions, parent teacher conferences and throughout the year on child development, teaching techniques and parent communication
• Coach head teachers in the development and communication of their assistant teachers
• Challenge head teachers with special projects related to curriculum and their own expressed interests

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS
 
• Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field of study
• Current Valid State Education Department Teacher certification in early childhood education or equivalent certification  
• Minimum 5 years’ experience as an Education Director of a commercial group daycare preferred
• Strong managerial skills
• Minimum 2 years’ experience as a group teacher in a program for children under six years of age
• Enthusiastic leader with warm, caring and positive attitude
• Strong client service skills
• Effective organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to train teachers
• Must have experience with and a desire to work with a diverse population of students, parents, and teachers
• Genuine commitment to education and learning
• Excellent judgment as well as problem solving/decision making abilities
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)
• SCR Clearance
