Description:

Brooklyn Center is looking for a Teacher's  Aide to assist the Head Teacher and the Assistant Teacher in the classroom with daily preparations and operations. This will involve creating an atmosphere of caring and warmth, which will welcome children and parents, as well as visitors. It will involve maintaining individual interest and learning centers, arranging equipment appropriately, meeting fire and safety requirements; assuring that equipment is safe, clean and appropriate for the child’s age and ability. In addition, the Teacher Aide must at all times maintain confidentiality of information regarding personnel, families, children and program matters.

Responsibilities:

DUTIES OF THE TEACHER AIDE SHALL INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING:

  1. CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Assists in developing and maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment for children.
    • Assists in developing rules for the classroom in cooperation with other staff, setting up an acceptable and consistent course of discipline and enforcing rules fairly and lovingly.
    • Takes regular notes on children’s progress and contributes information for the formal assessments of children.
    • Shares in routine performance of daily tasks required in the care of young children, including changing diapers.
    • Works in all areas of the classroom with individual children and with small or large groups of children. (Assumes full responsibility for the supervision of a large group of children for short periods of time.)
    • Assists in assuring the safe condition of classroom and playground equipment.
    • Assists the Head Teacher and Assistant Teacher in conduction inventory of supplies.
    • Assists the Head Teacher and Assistant Teacher with cleaning and storage of materials and assures that materials are used appropriately.

PLANNING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with the Head Teacher and Assistant Teacher on individual planning, classroom planning, lesson plans, and evaluation of the daily program. Assists in implementing these plans. Help Head Teacher and Assistant Teacher complete children’s development status screening within 45 days of entering the program.
  • Attends staff meetings as well as training sessions and workshops as appropriate or available.
  • Assists with the orientation of new staff, volunteers, parents, substitutes, and students.
  • Helps to plan for field trips and other special events.
  • Meets with the teacher team weekly to interpret and use assessment results to align curriculum and teaching practices to the interests and needs of the children.
  1. FOSTERING GOOD RELATIONSHIPS WITH PARENTS
    • Helps parents and others feel welcome in the classroom at all times.
    • Shares information from parents with the Head Teacher and Assistant Teacher on a daily basis. Assists in preparing for parent/teacher conferences and attends conferences as requested.
    • Keeps informed about the status of each child and family to assure the consistency of care between home and the Center.
    • Shares responsibility for clear and open communication between parents and staff at the Center.
  2. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Assists in daily record keeping.
    • Change Diapers
    • Works to ensure an atmosphere of goodwill, openness, and sharing in the classroom.
    • Carries out all other duties as assigned by the Head Teacher or Assistant Teacher.
    • Helps in the gathering of materials, setting up activities, and other necessary preparations for the smooth running of the daily program.
  3. PERSONAL QUALITIES
    • Reports to work regularly and on time.
    • Is dependable.
    • Has an enthusiastic attitude toward work.
    • Is able to evaluate self.
    • Is able to take constructive criticism.
    • Is able to initiate practical and innovative judgment in meeting work problems.
    • Has the ability to make sound evaluations in various and diverse situations.
    • Is cooperative under stressful situations, as well as pleasant circumstances.
    • Is willing to accept mundane assignments, as well as pleasant ones.
    • The Teacher Aide must indicate a willingness to accept additional job responsibilities or a change in job description, if necessary.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalency and 2 years experience

CDA and one year experience preferred
