Description:

The YMCA of Greater New York reaches half a million New Yorkers through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The West Side YMCA is seeking a Substitute Assistant Teacher who will assist in implementing developmentally appropriate youth-centered curriculum that will encourage learning through exploration and discovery.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of children in the program, by providing close supervision of all activities.
  • Assist with the implementation of youth-centered lessons and activities for areas of literacy, the arts, math, cooking, science, outdoor/indoor recreation, field trips, etc.
  • Actively communicate with and engage parents and families, as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe classroom environment, by reporting and / or removing all potential hazards.
  • Set up class spaces and materials with a focus on fostering an environment of learning and development.
  • Prepare food for program participants, and have them eat in a family-style setting that is conducive to language, cognitive, and social development, and promotes the development of healthy eating habits.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation; including but not limited to incident, accident, and behavior reports, attendance sheets, sign-in / sign-out sheets, and development / growth forms.
  • Maintain equipment, storage, and supply inventory.
  • Adhere to all YMCA of Greater New York, Department of Health, and Department of Education guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in designated meetings, all training sessions, and special events.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with young children in a group setting.
  • Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Excellent hospitality service.
