Puerto Rican Family Institute, Inc. (PRFI), founded in 1960, is a nonprofit, multi-program family-oriented health and human services agency whose primary mission is to prevent family disintegration and enhance the self-sufficiency of the Latino community. PRFI offers a comprehensive array of social and health care services that are culturally and linguistically relevant. Our core services include mental health treatment, crisis intervention, adult and children’s health care coordination, child placement prevention, residential programs for developmentally disabled adults, and Head Start programs.  Our programs operate in New York City and in Puerto Rico and are available to clients of all races and ethnic backgrounds.

PRFI is currently seeking an Assistant Teacher for the Bronx Head Start Program to be responsible for assisting the Head Start Teacher in his/her duties while helping to cultivate an engaging learning atmosphere for both students and parents.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Assist teacher in preparation and implementation of lesson plans minimum 15 children ages 3 to 5 years old and with their observation and assessment.
• Supervision of children during breakfast, lunch, snack and recess periods; outdoor and indoor activities. Responsible for children until parents or designated adults picks them up from the program.
• Assist Teacher in ensuring that children are taught and supervised in a consistent manner.
• Share the responsibility of providing appropriate care for children with disabilities.
• Preparation of classroom educational material and the creation of inviting learning atmosphere (teacher's made materials that will enrich the interest areas).
• Assist with identifying children's needs based on written observations.
• Assist in planning and developing activities based on the child development and learning check list and the written observations.
• Assist the Teacher and parents in maintaining a safe and healthy environment. Share the responsibility of maintaining orderliness and cleanliness in the classroom to include but not limited to janitorial duties as assigned by teacher such as: sterilization of toys, sweeping and mopping of floors in bathroom and classrooms, cleaning and sterilizing of toilet and sinks.
• Offer first aid to the children if necessary.
• Assist with daily personal hygiene of the children such as diapering, feeding, tooth brushing, toileting, hand-washing, and resting.
• Responsible for the volunteer sign-in sheets in the classroom for in-kind.
• Fill in for the Teacher when necessary and take responsibility for the children and the classroom.
 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have an Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education. Previous Head Start or early childhood experience preferred.

All candidates must be able to meet state-mandated clearance requirements including:
• Current physical examination and TB screen documentation upon hire
• Current CPR/First Aid certificates
• DOI & DOE Fingerprints (UPK, if necessary)
• Criminal background check
• Central State Registry Clearance

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to multicultural programming and the ability to meet program requirements while placing the needs of children and families first. S/He must be able to communicate effectively in written or verbal format to groups of all sizes and individuals and be computer proficient.

Language proficiency in spoken and written English and Spanish and/or English and French preferred.
